Computer Engineering: Cal Poly Pomona or UCSC

I am hoping that someone can give me some valuable insight. I plan to study computer engineering and am interested in attending Cal Poly Pomona or UC Santa Cruz. I am aware that CPP is known for hands on learning vs. the theory based education of UCSC. In my particular situation, UCSC is significantly more affordable that CPP- (I know that is not typical.) I like CPP a lot and although the cost isn’t deterrent, UCSC is closer to home and costs less. I am considering attending Santa Cruz for two years to complete my Gen ed. classes and applying as a transfer to CPP as a junior. I believe I have heard that the rankings are not accurate because CPP doesn’t have a graduate program to compare to. Can anybody help me decide which is a better option for a potential computer engineer?

They are both very good. It sounds like you want to start at UCSC to save money and be closer to home. If you perform well and take the right classes, you can transfer to CPP or somewhere else as a Jr. I’d suggest you don’t enroll at UCSC with the intent of transferring. Rather, enroll and really engage in the campus. Join clubs, use the gym, go to campus events and spend as much time on-campus as you can.

You will perform better, learn more and be a better transfer candidate.

Thank you very much for your response, I appreciate your input!

Anybody else have any input???

Any ABET-accredited engineering degree program will have both engineering science (“theory”) and engineering design (“hands on”) work in the curriculum. So, while there may be some differences between schools in these areas, no ABET-accredited engineering degree program will be lacking in these respects.
