I'm pursuing a Computer Engineering major at UIUC. I'm a NJ resident, so that makes me OOS. My top choice far and away is UIllinois because I am originally from Illinois (I was born in Chicago and moved to New Jersey when I was 11, and I desperately wan't to move back to my home state). My dilemma, however, is my ACT score from this September. Here's my score:

31 Composite: 35 English, 29 Math, 34 Reading, 26 Science. I know, its all over the place.

This is a score in the Engineering School's range, BUT both my Math and Science scores are terribly low. I was devastated by my Math score because I never scored lower than a 32 in all my previous practice tests. I am taking the test twice more on October 27 and December 8th, so there's time.

In terms of academics, I have a 3.89 GPA Unweighted with all honors and AP courses. I have an upward trend in my GPA as I have improved every year from Freshman to Junior Year. My extracurriculars are average.

So....what I'm asking is; based my ACT Score of 31 in September and my academic record, what are my chances for the Computer Engineering Dept. of UIUC?
Note that UIUC's range for the ACT in Engineering is 31-34

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

By the way, I just found this interesting. UIUC is known to not superscore, but here it says that they look for the highest sub-score if multiple scores are sent. As presented on their website:

“The highest composite score is used for evaluation. Colleges will often evaluate results from the sub-scores (English, Math, etc.). If an applicant submits scores from more than one test date, the highest sub-score(s) will be used in this evaluation. However, Illinois does not combine the highest sub-scores from different test sittings to create a “super-score” composite.”

In terms of getting into UIUC for computer engineering, your math and science scores will probably need to come up. You can when you apply check that you are willing to default to an alternative major (division of general studies) if not accepted to computer engineering and you could apply later with excellent grades. It’s very hard to switch majors at UIUC, and it only happens when you have the grades and if there are open spots. Your essay can be important as well. Document what you have done in the past to prepare yourself for this field of study. Don’t forget Purdue as well for engineering. They are both equally as difficult to get in to, but I don’t know about their computer engineering program. Can you get a tutor for the science and math piece of the ACT? Also, double check to see if they will accept later scores once you have applied. Good luck!

In response to your post, a 29 in math was foreign to me because I always got a 32+ in math on my practice tests. Even just recently I took two practice tests; on both I got a 33 in math. As for Science, I switched up my method for looking at the passages, and I have gotten a 30 and 31 in science on my last two practice tests. So I should be looking at a much better showing for Math and Science this time around. The main reason for this post was just my chances for a worst case scenario.
