Hi,
After some weeks of soul searching, I have decided to become a computer engineering major as opposed to a business/econ major. As a result, my impending application process will be much harder due to the competitiveness of engineering programs.
Here are my stats:
UC GPA: 3.74
Cal Poly GPA: 3.6
GPA Weighted: 3.6
GPA Unweighted: 3.4
SAT: 1410 (720 CR 690 M)
AP: Calc AB (4), English Lang (5), APUSH (3), Psych (3)
Senior Courses: AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP Physics, AP Computer Science, AP Stats, AP Government
ECs:
Model United Nations
Future Business Leaders of America
American Red Cross Club
Pre Med Club
Wounded Warriors
Rec Basketball
Interact Club
Philosophy Club
I live near San Luis Obispo, CA. I moved cross country from a competitive NY high school after 10th grade. I got a 4.7 GPA (All As in very hard classes) for 11th grade in my Cali high school. I would appreciate it if you guys would chance me at the following schools:
1 UC Santa Barbara
2 Cal Poly SLO (local resident)
3 UC Davis
4 UC San Diego
5 UC Riverside
6 CSU Long Beach
7 SDSU
8 UC Irvine
9 Ohio State University
I would love to hear any recommendations for good engineering schools that I should apply for. (I need financial aid. Probably not eligible for FAFSA aid. 105k salary)
Based on my son’s results last year for computer engineering, I would say #1-4 are out of reach. However you would probably be a match for UCSC, which has a very good CSE program.
Run the Net Price calculators for all the schools on your list. If you are local to SLO and commute, your costs should be just tuition and books around $8-9K/year.
FASFA only determines if you are eligible for Federal Aid but you also need to fill out the FASFA since regardless of income, you can get unsubsidized student loans totaling $27K/4 years.
CSU’s and UC’s give little merit aid, so you need to find out what your family’s EFC (Estimated Family contribution). This is the minimum amount your family will be expected to pay. I assume you are considered a CA resident? CSU’s and UC’s do give good FA to in-state applicants if they qualify.
