Computer Engineering College?

Hi,

I am looking for a good computer engineering college with research opportunities for my daughter. She might get into 2nd tier college but 3rd tier colleges could be her safety school. All online searches are so confusing. please help. TIA.

You are going to need to give us more information.

What is your home state? What is your budget? What is your budget without taking on any debt? What are her stats (GPA, test scores, …)?

Home state - California
Budget - something equivalent to UCs.
GPA - 3.85/4.4
ACT - 32

Is 3.85 the unweighted GPA?

If so see that list of schools that offer scholarships that might bring you within budget: College Board National Recognition Program (includes former National Hispanic Recognition Program) Class of 2022 - #452 by AnonDad2026

What year is she in school?

Are you considering in state schools? If so, look up which of her courses received a UC/CSU honors bump in GPA here and calculate her UC/CSU GPA here: UC/CSU GPA Calculator

UC’s and CSU’s are test blind this admission cycle. GPA will be weighted heavily for both the UC’s and CSU’s. CSU capped weighted = UC capped weighted GPA unless she has taken community college courses.

What is your local Cal State where she will get priority and should make a good safety unless she has some Safety schools on her list?

What is she interested in doing with a degree in Computer Engineering and what kind of research is she interested in pursing?

Utah and Arizona are obvious safeties that will come in at or below the price of a UC.

Thanks, I checked the list. Which one has a better acceptance rate? She wants to get into research than hands-on experience.

Some schools on that list like ASU and University of Arizona are auto-admit for the stats you provided.

To be clear, does your daughter want to do computer engineering (primarily the hardware design or low level driver programming of computers and other digital devices)? Computer engineering would mean taking a fair number of electrical engineering courses, along with a few programming classes. See https://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/comparison-of-majors/ Or is she more interested in programming, for which a CS degree might be more appropriate?

Don’t forget to check out the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program. It’s not for every school or every major, but if it works for her, it might make more out of state colleges affordable.

Thank you. How do these schools compare for CE - ASU, and UA?

She is not interested in CS but she is a bit confused about CE. Here is what I know - She is interested in Robotics, hardware part (where she can assemble and code), and cognitive science and AI. TIA.

ASU is ranked #20 for Computer Engineering by US News.

University of Arizona is not in the top #20 for Computer Engineering but is highly ranked for Computer Science.

There are schools with robotics engineering. For the robotics and AI for the tier you are considering look at
