I plan to double major in computer engineering and computer science, is this a good choice or a bad choice?

if you already know whether your want to work in software or hardware,

i personally think double majoring is a waste…

bad choice. they are like 80% the same degree.

just study one or the other and if you find you like the other’s emphasis more (CompE’s emphasis: systems, CS’s emphasis: computation), just take electives in the other’s area

Yeah, you’d probably be better off just getting a minor since odds are there will be a decent number of required classes you don’t care a whole lot about. Minors are a ton more flexible and let you take more advanced classes in your major’s field.

if you do electrical and computer engineering, there’s probably a lot more overlap

FYI-
I had called sons school about this.
I was told he could not double major in comp eng and comp sci as there are too may overlaps. A computer eng major has taken all the comp sci courses.

"A computer eng major has taken all the comp sci courses. "
- Strange. I would question the merit of that institution’s CS program (or possibly extoll the merits of its CE program). Danger, Will Robinson.

Ummm… don’t double major in CS and CE. It’s a waste. Do one or the other and, if you want to, do your electives in the other area. The symmetric difference is small enough that it’s probably covered by electives anyway.
