Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not it’s simple to change majors from CE to CS? I was reading online and the major change process for majors within CSE is relatively simple, but for ECE to CSE would require a bit of effort. Is computer engineering part of the ECE or CSE department? Or more simply, would it be easy to switch from CE to CS?
Any help appreciated,
Thanks.
What year are you in?
You should check with your academic advisor. This sounds like something that is probably done relatively often. However, there will be requirements for each degree, which may differ. As such whether you have time to do the switch and still graduate on time will depend upon the extent to which the requirements for the degree that you want to switch to overlaps with the courses that you have already taken. It seems like this ought to be possible, but your academic advisor would be in the best position to know what you would need to do.
@DadTwoGirls
I’m an admitted student for this coming fall. I just want to make sure I would have the opportunity to switch into CS before I commit.
OK. You should check with the university. I have seen students make similar switches prior to signing up for their first courses freshman year, but not these particular majors and not this particular university.

I was admitted directly into one of the CSE Impacted/Capped Majors, but wish to switch to a different CSE Impacted/Capped major. What should I do?
All students already in a CSE major must apply to change into another CSE major: My Triton Link
@Gumbymom
Hi, thanks. I was looking at that before as well and I didn’t know if Computer Engineering was a CSE major or an ECE major. It’s listed as being administered by both departments, and is listed under both department’s majors. If it was ECE major, transferring into CSE is extremely difficult.
@DadTwoGirls
Thanks. I’ve contact the university, I just wanted to see if anyone else was in the same boat that maybe knew more than me.
@pufframs, next to impossible as far as I heard. If you were not admitted to cs directly, you’d need to take all of the prerequisites (4 or 5 classes) with cumulative GPA 4.0 and then apparently there is a lottery, so no guarantee you’d get in. If CS is what you want to study and you got other options/other schools that accepted you for it, go there. At UCSD CS is in a super high demand. As CE major, your registration priority for needed prerequisites is going to be the lowest, so also no guarantee you will get all the classes you need.
@lenocturne There is no requirement for a 4.0 for students admitted this year. Those coming in this fall only need a 3.3 in the prerequisite courses to participate in the new lottery system of admission to CSE majors.
I asked the CSE advisor just a few days ago about this exact same problem. Her response was:
“Please go ahead and read through our Capped Major Website for instructions on how to switch majors. Consideration is equal for all majors when attempting to transfer into Computer Science.”
According to the website, major changes within CSE are through Triton Link, while others have to fill out the JSOE major change form. Does this mean that it is simpler to change into CS when you are in CSE Computer Engineering already?
If you are in CSE CE then just change major. If you are in ECE CE then you have to get into the lottery system just like everyone else to transfer to CS.
