Hey everyone,

I'm a junior and since apps are coming up soon I've started making a list of colleges that I like for my intended major, computer engineering.

Could you please recommend some good private colleges as well as public colleges that have a good program?

you should draw up ‘your’ list first. people can add or suggest based on your stats. if you’re staring at a blank sheet, you are not ready for college selection yet.

This is a very rough list, mainly public universities (hence the reason why I am curious about Private universities)

UCs (UCB,UCLA, UCSD,UCI,UCD)
University of Michigan
University of Washington
Purdue
Cal Poly SLO
USC
Rice
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

I know I need more safeties & more private schools. If you could recommend those as well it would be much appreciated!

Let me know if you need any more information

Since you mention wanting more safeties…

Calculate your CSU GPA and Eligibility Index here:
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Calculate Your Eligibility Index](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

And compare it to San Jose State University’s thresholds here:
[SJSU Admission](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1199.html)

to see if San Jose State University can be a safety for Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and/or Software Engineering (the first two are more hardware focused, while the last two are more software focused).

San Jose State University’s location is likely to be more attractive to computer company recruiters than similar reputation universities elsewhere.

Other CSU campus and major impaction information can be found here:
[Impaction | Student Academic Support | CSU](http://www.calstate.edu/SAS/impactioninfo.shtml)

My CSU/UC GPA is 4.18 and an SAT score of roughly 2150~2300

I’ve exceeded the EI for SJSU by over 2000

Is this normal for safety schools? and do you have any more that you could recommend?

Thanks!

Note that CSU EI only counts CR and M parts of the SAT, so you probably exceed SJSU’s 2011 threshold by somewhat less than 2000. Of course, the thresholds could be different in 2012 or later years, but if you comfortably exceed them by an amount more than any possible year to year change, then the school can be counted as an (admissions) safety.

The other safety question to consider is what you can afford to pay without excessive debt.

ahh i see thank you very much!

Do you know any private colleges I could look into or some other lesser known public colleges I should look into?

At the safety level, consider schools near concentrations of companies of the type you may want to work at after graduation (or for internships or co-op jobs). Companies will often recruit at local universities, even those which are not prestigious enough that they would recruit at if they had to travel to recruit at.

I see, that is what I have attempted to do for the colleges on my list. However the problem that I am having is the fact that many of these schools that I am looking at seem as more of reach schools simply because they are UCs or because they are like Cal Poly, with a highly competitive engineering program.

Do you have any resources that I could look into in order to find more colleges so that later I can adjust my list and see which colleges I should actually apply to?

For other CSUs, you can check the impaction info link.

For UC freshman admission info, you can check http://statfind.ucop.edu .

I’d it says that the major is impacted
What differences should I look for when looking at freshman profiles?
And is there any way to tell to what extent it is impacted?

A low match/safety you should consider is Bucknell in PA. Similar in student body to USC, but with an east coast flavor and out in the country as opposed to in the city. Another private school you might like is Vanderbilt.

What about Santa Clara University?

ill certainly look into those schools!
I can’t believe I didn’t think of vanderbilt!

Thanks!

DrGoogle, I havnt heard much about SCUs comp engineering program
And for what I have heard I understand that its a lot of work with little reward?

If you have any further information about them for comp engineering please send it my way :D

Carnegie Mellon =o And if you are a minority, that helps you with aid if that’s important to you

Yeah I was thinking about cmu but I didnt think I would get in.

I’ll check their stats again and see if I match up. Thanks! :D
