Hey guys, I'm a prospective transfer student (junior) interested especially in the Computational and Applied Mathematics degree program. By the time I enroll (assuming I apply and get in and then fid aid works out etc.) I'll have finished the calc sequence including pde's, an intro and proof course in linear and the assorted mismash of stat and courses I thought were interesting (combo, prob. theory) and math logic.

What worries me is at my school we don't really work with cas's at more than a superficial level. I mean I'm familiar with maple but I'd know maybe 10 functions off the top of my head (the integration ones), I've also taken a course in matlab and I've done work in R but I don't feel particularly competent with any of these programs. I know CMU has a reputation for computer integration, how hard will it be for me to adjust? With the calcs out of the way I hope I've dodged a fair amount of comp work but I can't be sure.

Courses like: Symbolic Programming Methods, Fundamental Data Structures and Algorithms and Principles of Imperative Computation particularly worry me.

One last question, does anyone know what its like to jump into the math program at CMU your junior year (are the people friendly?)? It seems like they have everything pretty well laid out for you, it reminds me of an engineering program O.o I would hate to have to spend five years.
