Computer question from ignorant parent

When freshmen want to use their computers in their dorm rooms, what do they have to do to hook up to ResNet?

I'm asking mainly what sort of equipment they need. Do students need to bring cables or anything like that?

They provide the cable... it's a regular ethernet cable.

every room comes with an ethernet cable and there is also a CD that you get to install Bear Access. Bear Access is a package of programs that includes Just the Facts, Colts, Thunderbird, and a lot of other optional programs.

The only thing the student needs to bring is the computer itself and any necessary items otherwise such as battery (if laptop), power cords, monitor etc.

They no longer include the CD for bear access. You can dl bear access from the website.

No wifi?

Where are the hotspots on campus, if any?

There's wireless all over campus, just not in most dorms. See http://www.cit.cornell.edu/redrover/

almost all dorm rooms do not have wifi acess b/c cornell resNet wants to make sure they charge you for those late night anime sessions ;)

hopefully dcplusplus will still be there ^.^

freshman dorms DO have dc++

well the existance of dcplusplus depends on a few things...you forget this is not an official thing...so shhh and let's hope for the best!

dc++ doesn't exist, it's a lure by Cornell to get students to come, just for the free stuff. Cornell doesn't give you anything for free.
