<p>My son will be a freshman this fall, and we are trying to make a decision regarding a laptop purchase. </p>

<p>He currently has a Dell Latitude D620. I realize this is an older model computer, but we wanted to postpone buying a new laptop because we have to purchase a bassoon for him this summer - a significant investment. </p>

<p>My thought is to buy the bassoon as a graduation gift and hold off buying a new laptop until Christmas. But here's my concern: he is planning to major in computer science. Will he need a better laptop right off the bat, or can it wait until the second semester?</p>

<p>There are plenty of computer labs on campus so that if your son needs to access a computer he will have no problem. If you are unsure on what will be required by his major, you should contact the department office to see if they can offer any guidance.
