Computer Sceince at UMD

Hi, college park is one of my top choices in universities and i was wondering about their CS program and if anyone can tell me a little about the major and what the difficulty is and how the professors are. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!

hi! I’m a cs major and it’s pretty fun!
Classes are pretty good but stressful at the same time. And of course, classes get a lot harder as you go up. The best advice I can give about the classes is to make a lot of friends. It is a lot easier to survive when you have a study group. The great thing is that cs students are really friendly. I legit walked up to people and now I’m really good friends with them. It doesnt even matter if you are the most antisocial weird person ever lol. You will make friends. The cs major is also smaller compared to bio or psych, so you see familiar faces everyday.
Professors range pretty widely, there are some really bad professors and some good ones. Often times you can avoid the bad ones but sometimes you are stuck with them. It kinda depends on luck lol. TA office hours are available and they are super helpful and a great way to make new friends. Some people can survive on their own but thats usually if they have prior experience. It is a lot easier to do well if you do have prior experience, so you should probably read up on some books if you don’t have experience yet. I came in knowing nothing and I’m doing okay but I struggle sometimes.
Another piece of advice is to always practice coding. If you don’t practice you won’t do that well. You have to make it a habit. As you move upwards, more points will be taken off for little mistakes, so as long as you practice, you will do fine.
That’s all I can think of right now!
Being a CS major is really awesome because there are a lot of job opportunists. People get emails all the time about companies wanting people and applications are attached. There are also careers fairs and those are really great for networking and getting free stuff! Big companies come down like microsoft, amazon, google, etc. Free food is always there too
I would say cs is a fun yet challenging major. You have to be patient and determined, and you gotta keep practicing. Classes get real hard real fast, so u also gotta be prepared. It’s a great major to be in because it is top 20 in the nation  Make friends, go to office hours (TA or prof) and build relationships with advisers and you will be in great shape!

That sounds like a great program to join and i have some prior experience but not much. Anyways thanks alot!
