So, I've never programmed before and well...the course prerequisite says "extensive knowledge of computers required". How true is this? Can I survive in such a class with no programming experience?

The prereq also says Math experience. I'm good at math, but how much is math used in the class?

thanks,
ansar

By the way, I'd be taking a class, not self-studying.

If you are good at math, that is generally an indicator that you will do well (not necessarily that you will like it). Programming is highly logic driven.

Comp Sci A is a completely introductory class, no previous knowledge needed. With a good teacher you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Yeah, I think you only need to be reasonably good at math to take the class.
My school lets you take APCS A if you take Honors AlgII/Trig concurrently.

id say knowledge of geometric proofs really should be a prerequisite. But computer science only requires knowledge of computers, like devices, hardware, memory and stuff like that. But no programming experience is needed, and you will do fine with a good teacher.

You don't need any knowledge of devices/hardware/memory etc for this class. It's completely high level in Java, everything is assumed to already be there and working.

Truthfully, the only math skills you need are about on the Algebra I level, you just have to be able to think about it in a certain kind of way. You have to be able to train your mind to think in a logical, programmer way. You'll see what I mean.

No programming experience needed. I waivered into the class (didn't take Pascal and had no prior knowledge of any programming of any kind). I just studied off the Dummies book for Java (which rocks btw) and yeah, that's pretty much it. Ended up taking the AB exam (5) in the same year. Wasn't hard at all...
