Computer Science A

Hey there.

I'll be giving the computer science A AP exam this year, and I wanted to ask you guys a question. Would using a prep book like Barron's be enough for the exam (i.e. without the use of a supplementary textbook)? Our class uses the Dietel: How to Java Program book and it certainly is a great book. But since it's intended as a college course book, it contains a lot of stuff that's not needed for the AP. Since I don't have much time on my hands, I don't want to study stuff that I won't need for the exam. So, will Barron's be enough (2009 edition)?
I do realize that the AB exam has recently been discontinued, but the additions to the A exam are not much, and I can cover them myself if they're not discussed in the Barron's book.

Thanks.

Well if I had to pick a single book, I would use Barron’s. But remember it’s a reference book. Having an actual human being to explain the concepts is what you really want.

I’ve taught the course since 1996.
I used Barrons without a real textbook and got a 5 on Compsci AB last year, so I think it’s sufficient.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Soothsayerr, did you have any background knowledge of programming, or was Barron’s the only thing you used for the test?

I did have some background knowledge on programming. Not much background on specifically what AP Computer Science tested, but just experience in general programming. I think for stuff specific to the AP test, Barron’s is enough. For just general programming experience [in preparation for the exam], honestly I think something like Java for Dummies would be enough.

in my opinion, barrons was good, but as with everything that is barrons, it’s overdetailed. There was some pointless logic stuff that you don’t need to know, but most of it is good stuff. Also, practice the FRQ and get someone who knows java to check efficiency, it will help if you can write a quick efficent program while taking the ap exam

Hi Ravi, what’s up  10char.
