Computer Science and it's Teachers

I have no prior experience in computer science, but I plan to major in it, and take my first classes about it this quarter.

I was looking at introduction to computer science 101 with Tantalo and was wondering if this class is at all relevant? Would it help me if I took Intro to Programming accelerated with Pang next quarter?

Intro to Java seems like a bad idea for multiple reasons, including the fact that the class might fill up before I have a chance to enroll.

How is Tantalo and Pang as teachers? Reviews on ratemyprof are mixed on the topic.

If you have zero experience with it, how can you be sure that you want to major in it?

Pang is very hard

Do you mean CS10? That class would make for a very mild, but solid intro. 1/3rd each programming, theory, and history. It’s not made with CS majors in mind though.

Do not take CS12A with Pang. That’s only for people who have programmed before. If possible, take CS5J with McDowell. He’s a very good teacher, and he will do everything possible to get you into that course. A lot of people will drop it within the first week. Not to mentioned it’s still offered in Winter too, and taking it then would not set you back at all. The follow-up course is only offered in Spring.

It is possible to take cmps 101 in the first quarter? That is like upper division with a lot of prereqs.

I’m a CE major but I’ve taken a lot of CS classes since they are closely related. CS10 is a class that any person can take it is a very basic course although I do prefer Tantalo to teach math since he doesn’t follow the book he uses. I had a friend that took him for CS10 she was a Business econ major she passed but she’d ask me so many questions that I started to just do her programming assignments for her. I’ve never had Pang but what I hear is that Pang is better at teaching upper versus lower division. If you ask me I agree with Liesel, it’s better to just jump right in with something that you’ll actually use like CS5J (Intro to Java(you can take CS5j and CS11 and skip CS12A)) with McDowell (who i think is a better teacher). CS10 usually teaches in python or C where as 5 is in Java which will be the majority of what you will use and it is better prep for the 12 series.

Python or C? How odd, when I took it it taught C++.

Haha oh god, I might have seen you in the lab once…someone similar anyhow. A girl was working on the veryyyy first CS10 assignment and just couldn’t get it. It was basically a “how to use unix” tutorial at that. Kept asking her guy friend behind her for help. It was depressing how little she tried.
