computer science and jazz music

looking for smaller (2000-5000 students) schools to major in Comp Sci with possible double major in Jazz Studies. I have ACT 34, SAT 1480, 3.86 GPA, College and AP classes. I play sax. Don’t really want to go to Ca or Fla. List so far includes Carnegie Mellon, UMass Amherst, UConn, Butler, Whitworth, possibly Lehigh and/or Villanova. Looking for more schools that fit into “Safety” or “match” but also have decent programs in both Comp Sci and Jazz. (also looking for possible scholarship opportunities). thanks for responding

Professors from these schools appear to be the first to have actively initiated and designed a model CS curriculum for liberal arts colleges:

Williams
Hamilton
Swarthmore
Amherst
Vassar
W&L
Colgate
Allegheny
Bowdoin

You can research these schools for their jazz opportunities. Pursuing a music major (along with CS) while concentrating your studies in jazz may be equivalent to a jazz studies major. Most of these colleges are academic matches for you – as most would be – though some offer better admissions prospects than others.

The University of Rochester is another school to consider. Conservatory classes there are open to any student who has met the prerequisites.

Thank you. A couple of weeks ago I was thinking I’d do Rochester and Eastman school (together) …I was all in, then thought about it and decided the bus ride travel/time just didn’t seem like the way I wanted to spend my time. Thanks for the other suggestions. Any other “not-quite-so-prestigious” back-ups?

Stevens. There is a Music and Technology major as well as CS. The great Carlos Alomar is a prof there. He was one of David Bowie’s go-to guys.

Try Southern Methodist, Boston College and Purchase College. It"s unlikely that all three would be suitable for you, but one might be.

Information from the Liberal Arts Computer Science Consortium, “History of LACS.” Other liberal arts college CS programs may have either equivalent or broader curricula than some of those at the referenced schools, of course.

A few decades ago, I was looking for a LAC that would combine my loves of science and jazz. I ended up applying ED to Wesleyan University and never regretted it. Looks like they’ve got a reasonably strong CS department for a LAC, and I see several notable jazz musicians among their faculty. Might depend on what you play whether or not any of them excite you.
