Computer Science at Chicago

Hi everyone! I was hoping to get some more information on the computer science program at Chicago. I know its not their strongest department, and I know it tends to focus more on theoretical aspects, but I was wondering if anyone knew how computer science students did at landing jobs at Microsoft or Google, or how they did at grad school admissions.

I'm really not sure what I want to major in, but I have been thinking about computer science, and want to make sure I wouldn't end up in a touch spot. I've been admitted to Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon, which I know are ranked much higher for computer science, but again I don't even really know that I want to do computer science, and like Chicago much more for everything else.

Have you tried contacting the Department of Computer Science? And, as a side note, if you aren’t ‘too sure’ about what your major will be–I wouldn’t suggest putting too much weight on their Computer Science department. While it is a thing to considering, I can’t imagine it being a ‘bad’ program. I don’t have any experience with Computer Science though, so take my information for what it is worth.

Short answer: Go to Carnegie Mellon.

Let’s face it: our CS is horrible–and that’s from the handful of CS kids I talked to. Many don’t even know why we have a CS department at all; I am aware of a student group advocating for abolition of CS department at Chicago because they think it’s too technical a major to be there, despite its strong emphasis on theory.

Wow student groups against it? That’s crazy.
