Computer Science at Columbia

How is the Computer Science department at Columbia? I know it isn't ranked as highly as a Carnegie Mellon or Cornell, but is it still a good program in the eyes of big software companies like Microsoft or Google? If anyone has any information about that, or about anything else regarding the department, please share.

Also, I am interested in double majoring in Econ with Comp Sci. Is this somewhat common and a doable option? If so, what types of job opportunities would this open up?

It’s a strong department and getting better all the time. Lots of people go to google and microsoft both for jobs and internships.

Yes. It is very highly recruited… second in the Ivy League only behind Cornell, IMO.

Expect to land a sweet finance gig if you succeed as a CS major at Columbia.

Cornell (4.6) and Princeton (4.4) are highly-regarded by their peers, whereas Columbia (3.9) lags far behind; top program, but third-rate relative to those of CMU and Cornell. Still a top program.

Tech in finance usually isn’t very sweet.

sorry, meant to say it is very highly regarded.

What are the ratings? Can you provide a reference? Thanks

Second in the Ivy league is a little silly (if it’s even right), since a ton of non-Ivys would place ahead of it. MIT, CalTech, Stanford, CMU, Cal for sure, plus a bunch of others more arguably.

Yep. MIT/CalTech/Stanford/Cal are all better than Ivies in their engineering.

With that said, Columbia CS is still pretty good. If you put MIT/CalTech/Stanford/Cal/others in the first tier, I’d put Columbia CS in the 2nd tier along with UCLA/UW/Princeton/Cornell/some others.

If you are looking for a job in a software industry, are you not better off at west coast?

Yeah, I’m applying to Berkeley and Stanford as well, but I was just wondering about Columbia’s department and whether I should add the school to my list.

yes, you should add Columbia to your list, along with UCLA/Cornell/Princeton/MIT…
