Computer Science at CUNY Schools

Does anyone have experience with Computer Science at CUNY Queens or Hunter?

Does anyone know what type of jobs these graduates generally get?

I have friends who go to CUNY schools (they’re not CS students though), and they tell me that there is no on campus recruiting at all, and that all graduates have to apply online and look for jobs themselves.

For anyone with experience with QC or Hunter compsci, could you tell me if you had any trouble finding relevant internships and jobs?

Not a single company recruits CS major at Queens or Hunter. Graduates have to apply, and look themselves. Queens is a Liberal Arts school, Hunter is similar, with an emphasis on Social sciences. The closest CUNY with some offers is City College, and that too is no where near, and I mean no where near on the same tier as SUNY schools(think Stony Brook).

Ok thanks a lot QCstudent, I figured as much.

Anybody else have any experience with these 2 schools?

City College is way better than any other CUNY at CS. Hunter and Queens college don’t even have engineering schools. They offer BA degrees which are not as valuable a BS. Stony Brooks has an amazing CS department, better than City College, but it is just too far and very hard to commute. I don’t know if their graduates get recruited as the ones from City College because of the location

Dowtorr, do you have any friends at Queens or Hunter? Do you know what type of jobs they get?

Dowtorr,

I have to correct you there. Queens College does offer a B.S in Computer Science, which is just as rigorous as City College’s B.S in C.S.

@OP:
City College has better recruitment than Queens and Hunter, whereas Stony Brook has even better recruitment than City College(far, far better actually, all the top tech companies recruit at Stony Brook).

So ideally, you should look into Stony Brook, where Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Apple, Amazon, Twitter, Pinterest and all the big banks recruit. Not a single CUNY school gets that kind of recruitment.

If Stony Brook is out of your reach, look into City College. If City College is out, go to Queens or Hunter, won’t make a difference. Ideally, you could attend Queens for 2 years, and then seek a transfer and complete your B.S in C.S.E at Stony Brook.

To give you a sense of recruitment, Stony Brook any given semester, has~450 positions for CS majors. Less graduates, more offers.

I do want to remind you that Stony Brook’s CS program is the size of Queens College, City College, Hunter College, Lehman College, Brooklyn College, and a couple of other small CUNY’s combined. Our CS school is the size of City College’s Engineering school + the NSB at Queens College, plus a couple of other buildings combined.

There was a particular member on here a couple years ago who attended CUNY(CCNY). I don’t know if he still posts or not.

From what I know, CUNY is not a bad school for CS. If you want to get into CUNY, apply to CCNY. The CS program over there is reputable and accredited. Don’t apply to Hunters or Queens.

It’s not that great to go to CUNY hunter and queens to get a a CS degree. It’s better to go to City college or stonybrook or buffalo.
