Computer Science at Fordham

Son was accepted as CS major with some merit (10k) and need based(5K) aid, total cost would be around 50K per year after Stafford Loans. He really wants an NYC location and was also accepted to NYU, Manhattan, St. John’s & Pace all in CS. NYU he was accepted to NYC College of Arts and Sciences, not Tandon/Polytechnic in Brooklyn. In addition, also accepted to Binghamton in Watson School and all the other big SUNY except for Stony Brook.

He likes Fordham a lot. NYU is also near the top and they offered 18K merit. So NYU cost is the same as Fordham. NYU’s program would give him a BA in CS (No BS in NYC campus) but NYU has great name recognition and I think the opportunities on the field will be there even with a BA.

However, with Fordham I have some doubts about the program. He would get a BS there and Fordham is good school with name recognition. I just wonder how good and known the CS program is at Fordham. Are Fordham CS students getting good paid summer internships in NYC? Are good companies actively recruiting CS grads from Fordham?

If he went to Binghamton, I have no doubt about the internships and job offers available to students and grads. Manhattan College is also high on the list, but it’s a different class of school and has no name recognition outside of NYC, even then not well known. We’ve kind of discounted St. John’s and Pace, they made great offers but their CS programs don’t compare to the others.

The decision is not solely based on the program, I want him to have some options and explore a little bit of liberal arts too and of course have a good social experience. So is it worth spending 50K a year for a CS degree from Fordham?
