Computer Science at Knox?

I am wondering how good the Computer Science Department is at Knox. CS is often a heavily resource-oriented major, as you need to have updated computers and equipment which can be expensive and Knox has major financial problems. Does anyone have information about Knox's Computer Science program?

My daughter is taking a CS class this year and the professor is amazing! The class is basically an intro class and is a pre-req for more classes, so it’s filled with a variety of students - those who’ve never understood how to write a program to those who are pretty well versed in it. The equipment is current but the professor is outstanding.

My husband, who is in the computer field, is impressed with the homework she shows him. I know it’s not exactly answering what you asked but based on this info, I suggest you call and speak to someone as my view is that it is a quite good program.

Full disclosure: I teach CS at Knox. Someone pointed out this forum and I figured I could respond. If you have any questions about CS at Knox, go to our department webpage (cs.knox.edu) and email any of our faculty. We get fantastic students at Knox, but we always want more of them.

Regarding resources: CS is not as expensive as you’d think, especially at the undergraduate level. Computers are competitively priced, and the college already provides several computer labs for students, which we can use for teaching our larger courses. Most students come to campus with laptops these days, and all of the software we use is open-source (and therefore free) and available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The CS program at Knox is in very good shape. We have 3 full-time faculty and offer a rigorous undergraduate curriculum, and we now have the highest enrollments we’ve had since 1998-1999, before the burst of the tech bubble.

One of our faculty received an NSF grant and has hired 4 students the last couple of summers to do research on parallel computing. One of our students wrote a secure online voting system that Student Senate has used for their elections for a couple of years. A team of Knox students built a Google Maps webapp to help one of the local volunteer fire departments track fire hydrants. Knox is small, so if students get excited about something, we can usually find a way for them to pursue their passion.
