Computer science at Lawrence?

Just learned about Lawrence and am very intrigued. Seems to be strong in the sciences and has a conservatory that doesn’t require you to be a major to be involved (my son’s a good French horn player but not convinced he wants to go the conservatory route). He iss particularly thinking about computer science, and it only looks like Lawrence has two faculty members in that department. Yet, they apparently have a CompSci special interest house? Any folks out there with experience with the Lawrence CS department that can comment?

Thanks!

My daughter is a sophomore there and she is pursuing dual degree with music performance and math. The math professors she has had so far are very good and the work is challenging (which is a positive?!). It’s my understanding that she has had more computer science majors than pure math majors in her classes so far…advanced calculus, combinatorics and now linear algebra. It’s a small school so the department is small but you get a lot of attention, the profs are there for office hours and you really get to know them. Sciences are also very strong at Lawrence and, again, lots of opportunities for research, hands on experiences, etc. Many of my daughters friends are biology, biochem and physics majors. On the music side. there are opportunities for majors (BM and BA) and non-majors (through audition for ensembles) and there is music going on all the time. I think some of the special interest houses are closing in the next year due to zoning issues but they are working on plans to add new special interest housing in some form or fashion. There are plenty of clubs (that sometimes form houses) for the wide variety of “multi-interested” students that Lawrence seems to attract. Hope this helps and I’d encourage a visit and maybe sit in on class.
