Computer science at NYU worth 200k?

I got into Stony Brook for computer science and received a 4k/yr scholarship, and when combined with free tuition, I would be paying about 17k per year.

On the other hand is NYU Tandon for computer science as well. I received no financial aid (do not qualify), nor scholarships. I would be commuting (would much rather dorm, but that’s financially irresponsible) if I did go to NYU, so I would only be paying tuition and fees, which is about 50k per year.

Assuming I can attend both and graduate debt free, is it reasonable to go to NYU for 33k more year? How do the 2 schools compare for CS and is it easier to get a job at one rather than the other?

CS jobs are very skill based, depending very little on school name. I would say save the $200k.

@jzducoi how does the reputation of Stony’s CS program stack up to NYU’s?

Stony has a ranked CS program in the 30s, so very close to NYU’s ranking. I would go to SB with no hesitation.

I don’t see why this is even difficult. Commuting to one school that costs a ton more vs. living on campus at a far cheaper one when both are roughly the same in CS.

Absolutely not. Go to Stony brook.

Unless you have a problem with Stony Brook (a lot of people seem to hate the campus,) go there.

When you have the choice of living on or off campus i would recommend the on campus option. You will feel much more connected and it will be far easier to be part of the community both socially and academically.

CS for $200K? No. Definitely not worth it especially if you have great options.
