Anyone know anything about the computer science program at Pitt?

Is there anything specific you wish to know? I might be able to answer a few questions and/or direct you to someone who can.

Thanks for responding! And I just wanted to know basic questions like is it ABET accredited (I’m still confused if this matters for computer science), is it a good program, do you like the courses, professors, fellow students, etc. How big the program is, difficulty level, is it possible to pursue comp sci at pitt and still have a social life.

ABET is an engineering accreditation and Pitt’s engineering programs are accredited. It doesn’t really apply to Computer Science as far as I am aware, although it exists. For instance, neither Pitt’s nor Carnegie-Mellon’s CompSci is accredited by ABET, nor is Harvard, Yale, Duke, Stanford or CalTech. So does it matter? Absolutely not.

The university is accredited overall by the Middle States Commission.

I visited with the heads of CS department with my son. I was impressed. Before the meeting I was concerned because CS was not in the engineering department as it is at most colleges he is considering. All concerns were put to rest. Pitt is one of his top two that he is deciding between at this time.

Thanks for responding vryproudmom! Can you please tell me what impressed you about the program and what you and him liked about the program?

My S and I visited in early November. The first day he attended a class which he enjoyed very much and the second day we met with John Ramirez, the program director and possibly the program administrator. My S made the appointments so the name is escaping me.
I wish I could give you details but all that S and I can really remember is the knowledge about the program that was imparted and enthusiasm to answer all questions about the program. I remember they asked S about specific interests. Besides courses they also talked about the coop program and career office. It was obvious to us that they were enthused about the work they were doing.

I wish I could be of more help but the specifics escape me.
What other colleges are you considering?

It’s okay! Pitt is the only college I’ve been accepted to so far. I’m waiting on Georgia Tech, Drexel, UMASS Amherst, Northeastern, and George Washington.

S also applied to UMASS and Northeastern. Both had great CS departments. Pitts scholarship offer is the best so far. I am pretty sure it will come down to Pitt or NC State though. Good luck with your schools. Hopefully you will hear from them soon.

vryproudmom, Thank you for all your help!

I’m currently a freshman CS/Japanese major at pitt and I have to can you that this school has a great program with teachers who are willing to go through hoops to help you succeed. I skipped out of CS 0401, the introductory programming course, so I don’t know how that is, but I’ve been having an excellent time in the other courses. I took 0445, data structures, last semester and felt like a learned a lot of relevant useful information. This semester I’m taking discrete math and assembly language. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about those classes or the program so far as I’ve experienced it.

As far as I know, the reason that CS isn’t in the engineering department is so that it doesn’t get bogged down in all of the courses that a subject requires if its in the school of engineering; COE, physics, bio lab, gen chem, and other stuff like that.

Since CS is in the Arts & Sciences, are you required to fulfill the foreign language requirement?

Yes, but I think that they’re waived with sufficient high school language study.
