Computer Science at Rice: Collaborative Projects

For undergraduates majoring in Computer Science at Rice - what kinds of opportunities are there to work on team based projects? That is - might several CS students work with students from say the Bioscience/Biotech Department toward creation of a program that analyzed some aspect of genetic structure, protein folding or other? Or might this kind of project occur just within the CS group? Thank you.

Hi! I’m a prospective student so I dont actually know for sure, but from what I’ve seen, read, and heard, I believe so. Rice is a very collaborative place so I’m sure this could happen. But Rice also just developed a computer modeling approach to studying cell communication in cancer. It’s a really fascinating concept and has been all over their website for a while. I’d take a look if I were you! It involves computer science and bio people I think for sure.

I got the Rice common app done just in time to do a an off campus interview. Maybe the alum will have some insight. ? That’s cool about the computer modeling of cell communication. So then the key thing would be whether undergrads can dig into this kind of thing. I’m trying to figure out which schools give a balance of theory and the practical. If it was all weighted toward theory I’d feel held back. But of course I understand the value of foundation.

Yeah they probably will. Rice has relatively few grad students so there’s a huge undergraduate focus. All of that is super open to undergrads it seems. And Rice definitely has practical. Finding that’s been a huge part of my college search because I do research now and it’s important to me to continue that. They even have some merit scholarships set up to let students start research as soon as they get there. Especially with the medical centers right there, there’s plenty of research. The students at Rice are also really involved and when I did an overnight, it seemed like they were eager to get involved
