Computer Science at UF

I am looking for opinions/experience on the Computer Science program at UF, specifically the BS degree in the College of Engineering?

How hard is it to get classes? Are the classes crowded? How is advising? Any thoughts on career placement, or internships/co-ops? Anything else we should think about?

Thank you!

I am studying CS at the College of Engineering, but keep in mind that I am a transfer student, currently in my second semester.

I have not had any trouble getting the cs classes I needed. (All my current classes are for CS) My registration date for Fall is tomorrow, so this might change by then :stuck_out_tongue:

Crowded? It depends on how you define crowded. I went to a small Community College and we were 20-30 students in the Programming Classes, so I expected it to be way worse at UF. Even if it is a large lecture hall, fitting 200 students (I wouldn’t expect any larger classes), there are a lot of empty seats and nobody needs to sit on the floor. Also, I never had any issue talking to a professor/TA after class or during office hours.

Advising is great! The Advisor for CSE is Todd Best. When he’s slammed during registration time it might take him a while to respond to emails, but I really have nothing to complain. He’s a great and very helpful guy!

Internship-wise I am not going to be of any help. I always hear other students talking about all kinds of internships they are taking during the summer, so I guess there are enough opportunities. One of the guys I am currently in class with has an Internship with Northrop Grumman in California this summer (if I recall correctly). But I never looked into any internship opportunities myself, as I work as a web developer since before studying at UF.

Edit: Almost forgot… I love it at UF and take that from a non-Football (or any college athletics) fan

Hope this helps a little bit. Let me know if you have any other questions

Thank you @Test90 - that was truly very helpful. My husband and son briefly met Todd Best and I think they liked him very much, but he did seem busy.

Do you live near or on campus? Is there any side of campus that is better? Did you have any trouble meeting people coming in as a transfer?

I would like my son to live on campus the first year, but my H is convinced he won’t like traditional dorm living (preferably East Hall). We have considered off-campus housing too.

We are trying to decide between UF and UA, with certain factions in our household leaning UA. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh my gosh, just saw a typo in my thread title - eeeeek!!! Could a moderator please fix?

“Computer Scence” ??? :((

LOL. Not a big deal. Headline edited.

Thank you so much @skieurope!

@SouthFloridaMom9 Most of the time he is not that busy (I saw him today and it was a 1 minute wait), but once every semester for about 4 weeks he needs to advise (or mostly all advisors have to) each student in the major and remove their hold, so during that time the first priority are always the current students and wait time to even see him in person might be 1 - 2 hours during peak times, but I guess that’s the “downside” by getting thorough one-on-one time with your advisor each semester

I actually commute 45 minutes every day, so for housing on campus or near campus I am of not much help. @Gator88NE should be able to tell you more

Meeting people should never be a problem at UF. It all depends on your son’s personality and how much he wants to get involved, if I would want to I could probably fill up every day from 6 am to 11 pm with clubs, activities, etc. So there should be no shortage of opportunities to get to know people. The easiest way I would think are group projects in classes, as odd as that might sound, but even if you are rather shy, you get forced to interact with people if needed

Once again, thank you @Test90! Really good info, especially the reassurance about Todd Best.

Ha ha Gator 88 is our lifeline to UF. :stuck_out_tongue:
