Computer Science at Umich?

I want to get a degree in Computer Science at UMich but I saw the both the college of engineering and LSA have comp sci majors.
What is the difference? Is one more reputable than the other? Are the job prospects the same? And are both B.S. degrees upon graduation?

Also, my ACT is 31C, 34M, 34W, 30S, 25R
Can you recommend which college to apply to?

CS-LSA vs CS-Engr:
<a href=“CS-LSA vs CS-Eng | Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan”>Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan;

Hopefully others will chime in to answer rest of your questions.

There’s no difference in reputation or job prospects. CS-LSA gives a BS and CSE gives a BSE, but the difference is meaningless.

LSA you’ll have to take a language, CoE you’ll have to take Chemistry/Physics. Which would you rather take?

@Vladenschlutte‌ thanks! but is one harder to get into than the other? I dont mind the language or the science, i just want to get into a computer science program. Which is do u think is more of a safe bet based on my ACT?

im trying to transfer into comp sci lsa, engineering is a lot harder to get into. Unless you really want that BSE degree, i’d advise going for the BS degree

@Maragidyne‌ thanks, but do you think I have a good shot at UMich regarding ACT only? im out of state. you can go on my profile and go to threads to see my full stats.

LSA is generally easier to get into.

@Prodigee‌ from what I remember that’s the average, though it may have increased to a 32, but still act wise you should be okay

I believe CoE is a little harder to get into but you should be fine for both

For CoE, the mid 50 for ACT is likely remains 31-34 or get slightly higher this year.

@billcsho but OOS will probably need 33+ right?

@Prodigee I just responded to your other thread. Anyway, you are right that you do need higher ACT for a decent chance at UMich CoE. I forgot that the admission median this year is 33 if I remember correctly. I don’t know the mid 50 for this year yet but it would be at least 31-34 as in the last couple years if not higher. The admission rate this year was only 20% (was 30% last year), but the chance for OOS would be even lower. Over 80% of applicants are from OOS competing for far less than 50% of spots.

Is it easy to declare CS major in umich? Also I was wondering if physics is mandatory for umich lsa cs. If it isn’t would i benefit from taking it?

Can someone answer his question ^ “Is it easy to declare CS major in umich? Also I was wondering if physics is mandatory for umich lsa cs. If it isn’t would i benefit from taking it?”

@AcceptableName Physics is not mandatory for LSA CS. I have no idea if it benefits you or not.

From what I’ve seen from my friends, it is certainly not easy to do well in all 4 pre-req classes, but getting the required GPA to declare for it is certainly not that hard (all 4 require a lot of work though). Out of the 4 I’ve only taken Math 116 (for a different major) and I can certainly say Math at UMich is a bitch due to the curve. With that in mind, I do believe (don’t hold me to this) you can use AP credits to get out of Math 115 (Calc I) and Math 116 (Calc II).

@hailbate My plan is to take calc 1 during the summer right after high school and repeat it at UMich my 1st semester. I was just admitted into LSA and I will go for computer science.

The AP Calc credit policy for LSA is different from CoE. I think you only get half of the credit until you take the next level and received a C or above in order to get full credits.

@AcceptableName Congratz! Sounds like a solid plan, and don’t be afraid to go talk to a CS advisor when you arrive on campus next year for advice and info on the CS major

@hailbate Do you think it will be better to take calc 1 in the summer at a local CC and repeat it freshman year? Or should I just self study by reading James Stewert calculus and save $600.00?

@billcsho Huh, you’re right. I guess they changed it recently or I was just really unobservant haha

@AcceptableName I can’t give advice on that. Personally, I would just self-study and save the money, but with how little I know about your personal self I have no way of knowing what’s best. I’m sure on Youtube there’s a professor out there who decided to record his lectures (this might be better than taking a class at the CC if you’re just going to retake it anyways).

I can also tell you the textbook name they use at UMich if that would help you at all
