Computer Science at Umich?

@hailbate That might even be better! What textbook do they use for Calc 1?

@AcceptableName

It’s the same textbook they use in Calc II, and so I think Calc I only goes through Chapter 6 I want to say?

Calculus Single Variable (6th edition)

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons Inc

@hailbate That has been the case for a couple years now.

For future reference, I was accepted into CoE OOS with a 32 ACT with the intention of majoring in CS. I think my major selling point was my strong STEM related ECs and essay elaborating on them. Don’t let your ACT or SAT score discourage you from applying to the school you wish to attend.

ACT 32 is well within the mid 50 range even for CoE. One should not be discouraged from applying with that score.

My son wants to get into Ross. His backup major is CS with business minor. I have heard it’s easier to get good grades in LSA which will help his application to Ross so he applied to LSA and got in.

Being in state and with 35 ACT, 3.93 UW GPA, 9APs, and lots of leadership positions, I am sure he would have gotten into engineering.

As far as computer science major goes, you get the same respect from recruiting. A son of my friend just got 4 offers from Google, Microsoft, a start-up company and a hedge fund company. The total compensation for first year from the hedge fund Co will be $200k. He is in LSA with good grades.

How much math is required for CS through LSA? Does it just stop with calc 2?

I don’t think there is much of a difference. I know someone who goes there right now and was afraid he couldn’t get into Engineering so he applied for LSA CompSci instead. Just this past summer he interned at Google in California, and has had a lot of success in his academic career.

If you’re worried about opportunity for jobs etc, it all depends on how proactive you’re willing to be.
