Do the professors care about undergrads? Is it an exciting department to be part of?
Yes, umich computer science is excellent. larry page, the cofounder of Google, is a umich graduate. University of Michigan is ranked #8 for undergraduate teaching by US news
Not unless it is Prof. Mudge.
Is it a great program? Absolutely. Do professors care about the students? In my experience, usually (but there are several who do not give a shit about students).
I meant to say not IF it is Prof. Mudge. There are honestly some professors who are so successful with their research that they don’t care about teaching. I have found ratemyprofessors.com to be pretty reliable.
Non CS major who just finished taking a CS class this semester. While I can only speak for my professor, I found that he was highly engaged with the students. For the final project that students in the class had to do, he cares greatly about every teams project. I went to general CS office hours six times for that project, and was helped personally by him three of those times. When it came time to present our final projects, he remembered my project and my team and the struggles we had had with the project throughout, and was delighted to see what our final product was like. For a large class that is not directly part of my major, I was surprised by the compassion and willingness to help that this professor (Bill Arthur) possessed.
It depends. Some of the professors do care about the Undergrads. But others couldn’t give a care. As someone earlier said, RateMyProfessor is pretty reliable. Just finished second year of CS so I’ve mostly taken intro courses. Also, some of the classes are large so you don’t get help at OH unless you’re willing to stick around for hours(which really is a drag). But the students here are really awesome and smart. They are more helpful than some of the profs.
