Computer Science at Wellesley

Hello! I got accepted to Wellesley College and I'm a prospective Computer Science major. I visited the campus and I loved it very much. But I was wondering how strong my resume would be if I were to be a CS major there. How would it compare to being a CS student in schools on the west coast?

That depends what schools you’re looking at on the west coast.

Wellesley’s CS department is pretty strong. A good number of people go on to jobs at Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc just like at other (perhaps, more technical) schools. Computer science in general is a great degree anywhere, since that is where most jobs are now, so your after-graduation prospects are very very good.

I have taken a few courses in the CS department here and loved them. The professors are so personable and helpful. I really wish I would have taken CS during my first year or my sophomore year; if I did, I probably would have majored or minored. The CS majors/minors are all a very tight group, and they are a great bunch of students!

Back to your main question though – if you want a really technical job after graduation, you would probably be better off at something like Stanford. Berkeley also has a very strong EECS program, but given the state of the UC system right now, going to a UC may or may not be the best choice right now. Wellesley offers a stronger breadth of courses, in that even though you would focus your studies on CS, you would also take courses across a range of departments. At a school like Berkeley, a majority of your courses would be focused in CS. Do you want 90% of your college courses to be CS? That is up to you to figure out what you prefer.

Good luck with your decision!

Disclaimer: I’m not against CA schools; I’m just using those as comparisons as those are what I know best.

Chucklebunny, are you attending wellesley right now? If so, how is the computer science department?

Thought I would leave this here

My daughter will be a first-year in the fall, planning to major in CS. My wife and I are both in the CS field and have been impressed with what we’ve learned of the CS department at Wellesley. (There is also the prospect of taking courses at MIT, though I’m guessing that the time commitment required to get there and back would make this exceptional rather than commonplace.) We’re very happy with her choice to attend Wellesley. After all, she could change her major, so it’s great to be at a school with strong departments throughout.

West Coast schools certainly have access to (and relationships with) lots of employers. However, the Boston area (and increasingly, NYC) have no shortage of high tech jobs. You could check with the CS department about the placement rate for their graduates; I imagine it is very high.

CS job placement is amazing – Wellesley has people everywhere. There are the well known places like Google, Facebook, and Apple and as has been said, the Boston tech scene is growing. Most big companies have huge offices in the area with lots of open spots for entry level positions and higher and there are lots of other places with headquarters in the area too… TripAdvisor, Vistaprint come to mind immediately as those with alums in tech positions.

My rising sophomore D has decided to major in CS and LOVES the department. She has zero doubt that she will have excellent job offers before graduating (already!).

@ChuckleBunny Hi there, I found this post on Google while doing research about the Wellesley CS dept. I just got accepted to Wellesley and I am also a prospective CS/ MAS major. I know it’s been a while since you graduated. But I really hope that you would reflect on your experience as a CS major at Wellesley and perhaps talk a little bit about the MAS dept as well—like the job offerings of both departments and the differences between the two majors. Thanks in advance!!!

While MIT may be a long hike, Olin is down the road (5 miles) and you can cross register for the computer engineering classes there. There’s a shuttle running all day between Wellesley and Babson/Olin.
