Computer Science Chances

I visited UIUC, and really love their CS program, however I know CS is very difficult to get into. Also could you chance me for Materials science as a second choice major.

Bump

Anyone?

You will be able to get in as an in-state. A lot of B students are applying CS, and that makes them look good on admission rate. In reality it is not that competitive. My freshman son told that everyone is very confident about themselves but only a few are real material.

As an upperclassman in CS, I’m pretty sure most of my classmates are “real material”. The average ACT score for CS is hovering above a 34 as of the last admission cycle. I go to the career fairs and Google, Microsoft, etc. are actively hiring our students. Once you’re on campus, transferring into CS is highly competitive (anything below an A- in the intro courses pretty much messes up your transfer) because so many people are trying to get in. Sure, I won’t deny that some of my classmates are cocky but I find this program to be just as competitive as other top schools. Your son is probably in a low level course but I’m finding that in the upper level courses everyone is capable of succeeding.
