Hi, I am currently a student at Drexel University, but I am planning on transferring to Rutgers. My main question is how big are the classes at Rutgers? Here at Drexel the classes right now have a lecture with many students and then a lab session with only about 20-30 people in the room. Is Rutgers similar? Also are the professors very accessible, or is there a learning community that can help with any problems one might have with a given homework? Thanks ahead of time, and please answer, I don't want this to be some post that gets ignored :P.

Hi!

I’m also a transfer student majoring in Computer Science. I’m a bit worried about the class sizes as well. I attended the open house for the computer science department and one of the professors says the number of students they receive is usually in a cycle(increases and then decreases every 4 year?). He said the bad news is that we are midway up on the cycle so the number of incoming students for computer science is increasing. If you check the courses for the fall we are pretty much screwed, all the computer science courses are closed. The only ones left opened i’ve already taken. The good news is i’ve heard they increase the number of slots available per class towards the start of the semester depending on the demand and what resources they have. I’ve also heard space usually opens up because people drop during the first two weeks. I would expect a typical class size to be 40 students? It depends on what class level you are talking about, level 100-200 courses may have 50+ people and as you get to level 300-400 classes with more pre-requisites it may decrease to 20-40. If you have a homework problems there will always be office hours from the professor or TA to get help, this is pretty much standard anywhere no matter the class size.

Thanks for the heads up! I really do hope the classes are somewhat small though, because that’s the one thing I enjoy about Drexel :).

midcara what don’t you like about Drexel?

Well, one problem is the money aspect of Drexel. It’s so expensive, and at the same time I struggle to see where my money is going. Another reason is that the only reason I chose Drexel was because I was originally an architecture major, but ever since that failed I’m starting to debate why I’ m still here because I know I would have never of applied here if it didn’t have architecture. And my last reason is that I feel like Drexel lacks in the extracurricular activities/clubs department. I want to go to a school that has a numerous amount of clubs for me to pick from, and Rutgers seems to be what I’m looking for.

Just want to add another reason is that my summer vacation starts a month later than my friends which sucks because apparently this will be my last summer before I have to go work on co-op, and I want to have as much fun as I can with my friends. Also starting late interferes with the fact that I’d like to take extra classes over the summer because the class I need to take starts before I get out.
