In some previous thread someone said Dartmouth has a "World-Renowned" Computer Science Department. Is this true? Not to be a ranking-freak but some info on CS rankings in the U.S. doens't really seem to rank Dartmouth's CS education "World-Renowned" like high up in the ranks. So say, compared to Cornell and Brown, how's CS program at Dartmouth?

I think it was a sort of misnomer. I'm not into computer science (I've a Poli Sci type of gal), but I do know that Dartmouth is a totally "wired" campus and renowned for its tech savvy among students (as in, you can get internet access on your laptop in the middle of the quad).

I think the joke was, even though Dartmouth's done such a good job with its tech communications and such, it still managed to have a hella backed up site for ED decisions.

As for its department and its quality, I'm sure it's "good," but you'd have to do more research to know the ins and outs of it. All the departments have their own sites within the main one; you should check it out.

It is good because it has alot of access to ISTS, which is a US security agency. So a lot of cool software, especially in security, is from Dartmouth. Also, BASIC was founded there.

According to the US News 2002 ranking, Dartmouth's Computer Science Department was ranked #47.

for Graduate school

To my knowledge, their research is nothing special, but that doesnt reflect the quality of their undergrad education. I've seen cs cited as one of the stronger undergrad programs at dmouth several times.

Auracon, why would you choose Dartmouth anyway; you got into UCLA's computer science program, which is DEFINITELY world-renown. Just because UCLA doesn't have an "ivy name" like Dartmouth doesn't mean you should rule out the possibility of going there. Anyway, Dartmouth has a lot of partying, and I know that bible-flipping, God-fanatics like yourself may not be into that sort of thing. . . .

Oh phemenyst, who said I wanted to go to Dartmouth because of its "ivy name"? I am seriously considering Dartmouth because I know that it's got a decent program for what I'm looking for. I just wanted to check out what other people thought about it. And as for your claim about myself being "bible-flipping, God-fanatics" and therefore not fitting into Dartmouth's party scene, don't you think I won't fit in UCLA's social scene too as the school also has a "lot of partying"???? What a narrow insight... makes me worry.

Sorry, I didn't mention that you wouldn't fit in to UCLA.. Would you like me to remind you that you may not fit in at any semi-developed, sophisticated college with your backward views about religion? I'm surprised the government let such a Neanderthall like you get a green card.

(Maybe we should tell the other people on CC that we are best friends from the same high school, and our "heated" argument is a joke....)

Funny stuff.
