Hello all! Recently, I was accepted to the UMN CLA. My first choice was CSE, but I am sure that i will still attend the UMN regardless. I have a large interest in comp. science and was relived to find that the UMN offers a BA in comp. science in the college of liberal arts. However, I have found that most employers want a B.S. which makes me reluctant to pursue it. On the other hand, a BA allows for much more breadth in different disciplines and not strictly CS. But the feeling of not getting a job because of having a bachelors of arts instead of bachelors of science makes me shiver. My question to all of you is should I go for the BS or the BA?

What is the dilemma? You know you want the UofM and you know you want CSci. Do your best freshman year and apply for a transfer of college to CSE if your grades are good enough. You can contact the CSci department to check which courses to pursue to keep that option open (probably the only difference is physics). Good luck!

The problem I am having is that I want CS, but I want to take electives in other disciplines as well. A BA, I have read, lets you do this and a BS does not. However, many have said that a BA would not result in jobs after graduation. This is the problem.

I don’t agree with that. The BS has a few more requirements but I think you would want to pursue most of these with the BA as well, and there is room for elective courses. The catalog entries are public, so you can figure out the differences for yourself.

I guess. I just really want a well rounded education with CS and other disciplines like psychology and business. I also wanted to study abroad and I might do a work study as well. Well, I will worry about this once I get on campus. Thanks for the advice and help though.
