Computer Science Direct Admission Appeal responses?

Many kids in Washington state have gone through running start in CS heavily, for at least 2 full years. Many of them are already super good students like 4.0 gpa including college course. Those kids should get into UW CS. Otherwise, when those kids go out of state, a good portion of their running start CS courses cant be transferred at all.

I also try to figure out this UW CS direct admit stats. It seems that kids have a very high probability to get in (with or without appeal) when they have 4.0gpa including running start courses, 1550 SAT, demonstrated interests in cs, math, or maybe physics, AND demonstrated interests in putting UW CS as no 1 choice.

I also try to speculate some figures. The state population is about 7 million and roughly we have 70K high school graduates each year. The top 2% will be likely the 4.0gpa kids which are of 1400 students. Among these 1400 kids, there might be 500 students actually apply UW CS, and let’s say 40% of them will go out of state (like MIT, CMU, UCB, etc.). The remaining will make the spots available to UW CS (280 a year?)

@typhoonshores you don’t need to take Subject tests but you still need to take SAT or ACT right? How high do you need to be for them? Thx

@Bebu19 Correct, you don’t need to take the subject tests. I think above 700 for each section on the sat is enough to be very competitive but I still got in without a score that high.

@typhoonshores congratulations on getting in on appeal. I emailed the fyp and they updated my major on record to reflect my honors status and CS major. Right now, all of the A&O spots are full, but they release another 40% of spots on May 1st so you’ll need to register then.

@tkg2023 Thank you and best of luck to your son at Poly!

@JohnDope what’s A&O? Did we miss anything?

Thanks for your thread. UW AO direct said in email that we will receive the official email from Allen school of computer science; then the major will change. We did not receive it yet. According to what you described, do we need to go to AO office to get it changed in person?

@SeattlemomUW no, I didn’t go in person. Give it a few days for everything to update and if it’s still not updated then I’d just send them an email. When did you receive your appeal back?

@pdxtigermom A and O is admissions and orientation. It’s a 2-day event where you register for classes and other important logistical stuff for the UW. It’s mandatory and although all the spots are full now, more are opening on May 1st. If you go to the email you get after paying the deposit, it tells you what to do next and registering for a and O is part of that

@JohnDope we received the appeal approval email last Wednesday. But still not receive the welcome email from Allen school yet.

@SeattlemomUW I’d email the Allen school first then and ask them about it.

@JohnDope Hi, congratulations on getting into the program with your appeal! I am sorry you felt that your initial rejection and the other girl’s acceptance felt unfair, especially with her lower scores! And how infuriating it must be if she truly said that she only applied because “its the hardest major to get into!” She sounds so annoying!

Maybe, she had something deeper showing in her application. Though computer science was not the first thing she thought of as her dram job, it could be that she has other passions that can benefit from a computer science degree. You said this girl was interested in psychology and philosophy. Surely, the UW CS has many projects working on psychology related research like neurotechnology that maybe excited her. How can we know she is underqualified? We don’t know what she spent her summers doing, her home situation, her life, etc.

My impression is that UW, especially CS is currently in an era of lots of research spanning a wide variety of topics (CS is the future for everything!!). So, it makes sense for it to draw in artists, musicians, thinkers, and dreamers.

In addition, if she was a girl, I doubt she had as many opportunities as you to become involved with coding, hence the low female ratio in the CS dep. But, there are many ways to show your qualifications by making a difference for the things you love and convincing the admissions that Computer Science will help elevate those other passions.

I am so happy for you. You deserve this! If it still doesn’t make much sense to you, I would love to share my ideas with you and perhaps collaborate with you this coming fall. Good luck in everything

@JohnDope @typhoonshores Hi! Sorry to revive this old thread. My partner just received admission to the UW but was rejected from CS. I discovered this site after doing a bit of googling on the appeal process.

He’s a 4.0 transfer from Bellevue College, all pre-requisites complete, with undergraduate research experience in machine learning. We believe his statement did not have the right impact, and he’s hoping to try his luck at an appeal. I’m going to help him write it, but I can’t find any examples on the web. If either of you see this and are willing to send me your letters, or even just offer some advice so I can get an idea of what to write, I would be immensely appreciative.

If anyone else has relevant experience, I’m open to any advice! I will probably make a separate thread, too.

I can’t figure out if this website has a messaging feature, so what the hell. You can contact me by email at beancanart@gmail.com

Congratulations to both of you on your admission. I’ve witnessed firsthand the work it takes to accomplish that, and the devastation caused by rejection.

Thanks in advance, if anyone sees this.
