Computer science Double Major?

I was thinking of double majoring in computer science and digital media or information systems and digital media. Will computer science by itself be difficult on its own?

Yes, computer science is a difficult degree program. If you find one that isn’t, it’s not worth the time and money. However, people graduate every year with degrees in computer science.

People also do double majors in computer science and other fields every year and they keep graduating. Plenty of people will correctly point out that you shouldn’t double major, or minor, or whatever, in the hopes that it will make you more competitive in the job market. That’s a recipe for disappointment. Rather, you can and should consider a double major if you have a genuine interest in two areas and would like to receive an education in both fields. The fields might be complementary, and both might help your career, but it should be more than anything your desire to learn more that should inform this kind of decision.

Also, and this may be an irrational prejudice, but I think you’ll find that a degree in CS will go a good deal farther than a degree in information systems, if you’re interested in that sort of thing.

A CS-only major could probably learn digital media and information systems very quickly whereas an I.S. or digital media cannot do most CS jobs. Even within a typical CS program, you should have some free electives to take in digital media.

As for I.S.??..CS elective courses in Databases and Networks will be more than enough to snatch IS jobs also. If you want business courses (to mimic a I.S. program), take like a “Accounting for Engineers” and take Econ as your social science general education choices.

Where I go, the CS classes are hard, but doesn’t require many credits so it’s not that hard to double major with. It’ll depend where you go. Plan out a schedule.

Thanks for all the information! I think in going to lean towards double majoring in computer science and digital media. The jobs for both are increases and I agree with you that a degree that’s challenging are the ones u go after. I’m going to talk to some of my professors tomorrow about it.
