Computer Science/ Engineering program insights please!

Son is accepted to CSULB as a Comp Sci pre-major. Per the website, this is normal procedure. Students have to do well in Calculus and Physics intro courses to declare the major.

There are no data that I could find to show the number applied, number accepted, target number for major, number of B.S. degrees conferred per year. According to the online Common Dataset, 1% of bachelor’s degrees at CSULB are in CS, 7% for all Engineering. Anyone have more precise data please?

He is going to SIR, as this is his only firm acceptance as of now pending UCR’s waitlist decision. Would anyone care to lend some insight please? How impacted are the math and physics classes? CS lower division classes? Is CCC with transfer to UC clearly a better path? What are grad school prospects coming from LB?

Thanks all!

Bumping to see if there is anyone with firsthand knowledge of CSULB CS program who is willing to comment.

Wow, crickets! I guess that is some useful info in itself…? Anybody?

@PadreDeTres dude chill lol, this sub forum isn’t really that active. Understand for CS unless he’s going to Berkeley, MIT or Cal Tech its what he makes of it. CSULB is a fantastic school. Their program is also ABET accredited(While for CS isn’t as important for engineering its a big deal). Its in the middle of a lot of engineering firms that recruit. Have a few friends who attended and are working for SpaceX, Northrop & Grumman and so forth. IF he puts the work in he can easily land a good paying career straight out.

Speaking from experience stuff changes and grad school is huge commitment (currently studying for the GRE). CSULB is one of the flagships for the CSU system. Professors are somewhat of hit or miss but you’ll get that any institution. Assuming your son puts the work in he’ll be just fine. But word to the wise unless he’s absolutely stuck on CS chances are he might change major. Which for is pretty common. If anything as long as he has your support he’ll be just fine.

@Zygole, thanks for the info.

Just read this. Did your son decide on CSULB?

@Themathaw, he decided instead to attend the local CCC Honors program. He will have small classes, priority registration and an expedited path for transfer to UC. First year is free. I am hoping to get his sisters to do the same. :slight_smile:
