Do any of you guys know how competitive it is to get accepted? Do you know if a lot of people are actually steered away from CSE because they can't get in? I'm planning on majoring in Computer Science right now, but I am actually considering computer engineering as well.

Right now, I'm pretty confident that upon completing pre-reqs, I should've done well enough in school to be accepted but right now, my greatest fear is that I won't be accepted and I'd have wasted like a year or more of college and money just to complete pre-reqs for my major that I might not get into.

I need to consider this because I was accepted to UC San Diego directly into the CSE program.

thanks in advance

Anyone? Could really use the help...

It's known as a competitive major, but I can't speak from first-hand experience. Does the website give you enough information about the process or selectivity? If not, I suggest you call the department. I believe there are academic advisors within all the big programs, so try to talk to one of them.

Yay, heard back from CSE today and was offered direct admission into the program. The letter says that the DA program is meant to provide "a guaranteed path into our department to a very small number of high-achieving students", although I don't know if that answers your question, NViejeP. I'm female, which I'm sure helped a lot.

If you're offered to be direct admission, you'll get a small package with a DVD inside and an invitation to the CSE Direct Admission visit on April 18th. Funny thing is is that they tell you to RSVP by the seventh, but I noticed my package was postmarked on the seventh.

The computer sci counselor at UW said they accept just under 50% of applicants to the engineering school. (incoming juniors)

I see.. so I guess there's still a possibility that I get accepted. I think I put Computer Engineering as my first choice, and Computer Science as my second. But I guess it isn't too likely as I was in Pre-Calculus only even though I've gotten As in most of my math classes.

mdster, were you in any AP calc courses? I'm still praying that I'm accepted for DA, that way I won't have any stress with really anything at UW haha

Yeah, I took Calculus AB last year and I'm in BC this year. (I've never gotten my best grades in math though!) I'm also taking AP Computer Science A too. If you got accepted in UC San Diego directly into their CSE program, then I wouldn't worry too much :)
