Computer Science: Is it important to go to a high-ranking school?

Hey guys, I am wondering a lot about the universities I am applying this fall. I want to major in CS, but most of the schools in my list got pretty low-ranking in CS programs because those are the ones that give a lot of aid so that I can afford. I have also applied to some big schools with pretty decent financial aid package like Tufts, Cornell,… but the chance is not really high. So I am worrying sick about whether going to a school that does not have much reputation in Engineering - Computer Science will affect my study there. However, I have heard from some seniors who have graduated that for CS, it’s not where you study but what you independently research and explore on your own in the 4 years in universities that counts. Any body want to share their experiences? Especially those who are programmers??? Thank you very much

Undergrad school reputation doesn’t really matter in CS.

that’s absolutely correct.

I think it can be helpful to go to a well-known school. Alumni networks and being assured of a high quality of classes and being pushed to excel by fellow students are plusses. That said, it’s really what you know that counts. As long as your program teaches the courses you need and you can get yourself internships in the summers you should be okay. Most computer firms will test you as part of the job application process and many will hire lots of people from nearby colleges. Just make sure the school covers the basics.
