Computer Science major 61 series

Hi all,

I am a transfer student and need to take my 61 series and discrete math in order to declare my major in L&S. I am wondering if it is a good idea to take 61A and 61C both at the same time? Then take 61B and CS 70 in spring semester. I have some C++ programming skill from my community college. Thank you for any suggestion!!

61C assumes a knowledge of Java and data structures early on. The other side of the 61B pre-req on that is programming maturity/style, but you’ve probably got that already. But for the hadoop/mapreduce project you’ll be working in Java, so if you’re not familiar you’ll need to pick that up on the fly.

Taking two of the 61 classes together is generally not recommended. It’s a lot of work, regardless of whether or not you know the material. But as a transfer, you’re probably going to double something up. If summer is an option for you it might help clear up your schedule, but 61_ starts next Monday so if you’re going that route act fast. :P

You should also be planning ahead for upper division classes, if you’re not planning to take a fifth semester make sure you’ll be able to fit in enough upper division units without losing your sanity.

You can check the course web sites to see how much of CS 61B you already know:
