So, this isn't about me (I'll be entering college this year) so some people may say I'm being nosey, but I need advice anyway.

My brother is going to be a Sophomore (or something like that, he's flunked some, gone part-time, etc. so it's a weird situation) and he was in Chemical Engineering. All of the sudden, his girlfriend has convinced him that they should both major in Computer Science, and he's taking an Engineering Matlab class. He "enjoyed" the matlab, so he thinks he'll enjoy computer science, but I don't see him, or her for that matter, loving computer science. I've never seen him just messing around with programming for the love of it (like my Comp Sci friends do) and he has no knowledge but HTML and some Matlab.

So my question is... does anyone have any advice on what I should do? He probably won't listen to me, but I don't think it's a good fit at all. Computer science kids are normally people who play with programming for the fun of it, and simply love computers, and I don't see that from him. Should I do anything at all?

There are many types of cs enthusiasts, from code monkeys to software engineers to mathematicians and scientists and everything in between.

You don’t have to do anything–he’ll figure out pretty fast when he starts his real CS courses if CS is for him.

Alright, I guess he can figure it out himself. He’s just not exactly the most rational person, haha. Thanks

Maybe he didn’t find that chemical engineering was for him. CS is a pretty broad field and HTML and matlab are not indicators of whether someone will like CS or not. Your brother is probably checking CS to see if it is a fit for him. Personally, I didn’t know much about computers but when I took the intro to programming class. I loved it and decided to do CS. Figuring things out was pretty fun in the lab. I have learn tons of things in such a short time

For more dispelling of myths, see the thread I started on stereotypes/myths about engineering/cs.

CS is the type of major you find out if you hate it or love it pretty quick, usually one semester. He will figure it out quickly.
