Does this seem like a good option? It would be awesome to relate the two, and could definitely go into stuff like Artificial Intelligence and other topics. What do you guys think?
If you can do it without putting your performance, grades, time and money at risk, do it. Otherwise, not necessary if you’re into AI.
What are some of the best minors for a Computer Science major? I know I do not want to do Mathematics, that is for sure.
Check the institution you will be or want to attend. My university offers a software, internet programming, e-commerce, and information technology as a minor.
Work really hard and get into Carnegie Mellon. Seriously. They do a great job integrating the two. Or see how they do it and think about whether it sounds interesting to you, and then look up similar programs elsewhere. Neuroscientists (especially older ones eh hem who only started using computers as typewriters in graduate school) aren’t generally that computer savy (just ask our overworked IT guy!) so you’d have an advantage in that sense.
I’m doing sort of the reverse (since I didn’t start programming until after I started at college) - neuroscience major, computer science minor. Having a technical background in something like neuroscience can give you a huge leg up; a lot of people in bio-related fields are weirdly intimidated by programming, etc. I’m using my degree to go to grad school for bioengineering, specifically the intersection of humans and robots (think robotic prostheses, exoskeletons, and rehabilitation).
If you have a degree in CS and the neuroscience side doesn’t pan out, you’d still have a very employable degree. You say you don’t want to do a math minor, but that would honestly be one of the most useful options. I also was kind of “done” with math when I started college, even though I was good at it. But once I started to see its relevance and use for what I wanted to study, I started taking math as electives and I’ll almost have a minor in it when I graduate. Another potentially useful minor would be something in linguistics, if you want to get into the natural language processing in AI. You also don’t have to pick a minor now, before you start. When I started I thought I’d do a minor in international affairs. Once I started taking classes, my interests shifted. Don’t feel like you have to lock yourself into something now.
