Computer Science Major. What Colleges???

Hi guys,

I am a new member here. I am currently high school senior. I'm looking for schools that have good programs for Bachelor and/or Master Degree for Computer Science. Networking, Admins, or Web Design. I am living in California. I was considered top priority in Cali. So yay me! :D. Anyway, I would prefer colleges in California.

Appreciate all your helps,
Thanks!

Many of the UCs and CSUs are good for CS. So are many of the private schools. What kind of budget are you looking at? Have you checked the net price calculators?

Whats your budget and stats? CC posters need some guidelines before they can make recommendations. Are you interested in small/large, urban/more rural etc…

My family is low income (22k-80k). My brother went to UC Berkeley, he got scholarships. So I guess I am eligible too. But here’s the thing, he’s smarter than me and more talented. I am talented, but not as superb like him. I have prefer large and urban setting, like Berkeley, I like the environment there.

@ucbalumnus‌ I had not check the net price calculator. Would you mind give me some tips? I’m new

Thank you for your replies!

The California State post secondary system has schools at all admission levels - from easy to highly selective. The UC’s are more selective than the CSU’s. In addition, there are 112 Cal State community colleges. We can’t tell you much without your GPA and SAT scores.

You can poke around on the web to find each school’s SAT scores. http://collegeapps.about.com/</a> is a handy source for admission statistics.

All schools have web tools to calculate the cost of attendance since a “net price calculator” is required by the Federal government. Here is the calculator for Berkeley <a href=“Financial Aid Estimator - UC Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships Office”>https://saservices.berkeley.edu/calculator/</a></p>

What are your test scores and GPA? Include SAT breakdown.

Are you instate for Calif? If so, then definitely apply to all the UCs that have CS. They will give you the best aid since it sounds like you qualify for Blue and Gold (if instate).

All the UC’s with CS are very good for CS. Don’t worry…they all are fine.

Most people do not get their MS or PhD degrees at the same school as their undergrad…in fact, it’s encouraged that students go elsewhere to experience other profs, etc. So, don’t look at the grad school aspect now.

My high school GPA is 4.15 weighted with APs and 3.98 unweighted.
Here’s the breakdown of my SAT score, it’s 1720 total:
Reading: 550
Writing: 520
Math: 650

My SAT scores are improving though, I’m still waiting for the Oct SAT scores and I’m planning on taking Math 2 Subject test in December.

Thanks guys!

Are you first generation to go to college?
Without looking at your essays I think you have a chance at UCSD, UCI, UCR, all good for Computer Science. It depends on your essays, you could get into UCB l&s. Berkeley tends to be more holistic and gives more admission points to first generation, immigrants and tend to discount your standardized test scores.

SAT is low for CS at UCSD, UCSB and UCI so I suggest you retake but your GPA is competitive.
UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD/UCSB/UCD: Low Reach
UCI:High Match (like high GPA vs SAT)
UCR/UCSC: Match
