I have a daughter who is very interested in Scripps. She would like to pursue a computer science major at either Pomona or Harvey Mudd and we are both wondering how common this is.

From my understanding of the Claremont Colleges is that you can take classes at any of the schools, but your declared Major has to be at the accepted school (in this case) Scripps. If she wants CS, then she needs to apply directly to Pomona or Harvey Mudd.

From the Scripps college website:

These are the examples the college includes:

I’m just trying to gauge how this works in practice.

Some of those majors are new to the list especially CS. The best thing you can do is contact admissions at Scripps and Pomona to see how you can arrange it. I know that several students have complained that the wanted to take some classes at one of the other colleges such as CMC (for econ) and they have been unable to get in. I do not know if this will be a problem where the Pomona students would have first crack at the CS classes or not.

I don’t know Scripp’s particular details, but as for how common it is, I’d estimate at most 1 or 2 students per year. I did math at Mudd and there was a student from Scripps in several of my major classes. It’s true that econ at CMC is very popular so they give priority to CMC students, but I don’t recall this being the case with CS classes. There has been a large increase in women CS majors at Mudd from what I hear though, so I’ll echo the advice to contact admissions.

This article might shed some light. Apparently, CS departments at Harvey Mudd & Pomona have become so popular that faculty can’t keep up.
