I’ve read articles about UNC struggling to meet the demand of the rise in CS majors. What is the condition like now?
For example, if a first-year wanted to register for COMP 401 and MATH 381 for the fall 2016 semester, would he/she be likely to get those classes?
Are you in honors? If there is a version of these classes that are honors you might have a better chance.
They have struggled with getting everyone in introductory CS classes in the past, but as a current freshman CS major it appears they have largely fixed this problem, mostly by moving the intro classes into larger lecture halls. I was able to take 401 in the fall and I’m currently taking 410 and 411 this spring. I’m not sure how many freshmen take MATH 381 in their first semester, but you can always take something else if you can’t get that. I know some freshmen that took linear algebra (required for comp sci BS) in the fall. Anyway, if you want to do CS UNC is a great choice, I love the department here so far!
@noname87 I am not in honors. If I was, it would still minimally benefit registration because only one or two honors CS courses are offered every semester, and they tend to be sub-400 level electives.
@uncbound16 It’s great to hear that the department is catching up with the demand. That is exactly my plan as well–to take 401 in the fall and 410 and 411 in the spring, possibly along with another 400-level elective. MATH 381 and STOR 435 are the only math/statistics classes I would need to take, as I’ve earned dual/AP credits for everything else (233, 547, etc…).
Anyone else?
If you don’t get the classes that you need, you can usually show up to the class anyways and talk to the professor. KMP taught COMP 401 this past spring and he dropped anybody who didn’t show up to class the first day and registered people who wanted to be registered by using a Google Form that he presented in class. Math 381 is a little harder to get into because it’s more of an advanced math class for upperclassmen, but as always, you can talk to the professor/registrar to get registered.
UNC Class Checker is a helpful website that will text/e-mail you when your class is open, closed, or waitlisted. The only problem is that you have to be super quick to register on ConnectCarolina because other people are waiting on the same class.
Actually, you can just show up on the first day of class, there is a great chance professor will add you to the course after you fill in some form.
