Computer Science Major

As a junior, I have begun my search for the ?perfect? college. Thus far, only a few colleges, all of which are incredibly competitive, have caught my eye (Northwestern, Cornell, Columbia, and UNC). My question to you all is, what other colleges should I be looking at?

Information:
City: Greensboro
State: North Carolina
Race: White

Major: Computer Science
Minor: Political Science
Possible Professional Path: Law School

Stats:
Weighted GPA: 4.625
Un-Weighted GPA: 3.94
SAT: 1990 (680M, 650V, 660W)
APs: 10+ by graduation

My SAT score was achieved with very little prep. I am retaking the test in March and expect a 2100+.

Extracurricular Activities:
FBLA (10, 11)
Peer Tutoring (10, 11)
Key Club (11)
Beta Club (10, 11)
Ultimate Frisbee (11) ? Co-Founder

I plan to join NHS as soon as my school allows

Possible ECs (unsure if these count):
Built a website for a local band (Favor for a friend)
Programmed and administrated an online gaming league for America?s Army (The Game)

Work Experience:
Freelance Web Development

Extenuating Circumstances:
In 2003 my mother became paralyzed from the chest down because of a medical accident. Being that she and my father are divorced and that my brother is a sophomore in college, I am left to care for the tasks she cannot attend to herself. While she is not completely dependent on my care, her situation has placed considerable strain on my free time. I do not wish to use this situation to obtain sympathy but rather to help explain my somewhat lackluster extracurricular activities.

Based off your current stats:

Carnegie Mellon University
Case Western Reserve University
University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign
University of Pittsburgh
University of Washington

CompSci is probably worst major for law school. Unless your a CS prodigy, your grades will suffer because of your major. Just thought you might want that advice.

Carnegie Mellon's computer science school is extremely competitive, and I don't think you have the SAT math score and the ECs to be in the right range. Still, it would be a nice reach, though I assume that due to your parental problems you have some need for financial aid, and CMU is not renowned for being liberal with grants and scholarships.

Otherwise, I would include schools like Renessaelar, University of Tulsa, Rose Hulman Institute. and Georgia Tech.

Actually, I would argue that physics is probably the worst major in terms of GPA.

Actually, from what I've read it seems that majors are not treated equally. Law schools know there's a difference in difficulty between, say, nuclear engineering and American Studies. So the GPA difference won't matter that much, really.

University of Rochester, Case Western, and Wake Forest may work for you. Also, check out George Washington U and Boston U.

Ray192 thats nice wishful thinking. how many 2.8s and 3.0s(alright grades for a very-hard major) get into harvard or yale law??? not too many i assure you.

As a safety-type school, consider Allegheny College. They have a strong computer science program and require students to minor in a subject outside the area of their major, which would fit your interest of a CS major/political science minor. If you get the SATs up a bit, you should qualify for merit aid.

The reason I am majoring in Computer Science is because:

A. I enjoy it
B. I am unsure at this point whether I will attend law school, and computer science is a field that I will not mind working in if I do not attend law school.

From other posts I have read on this forum, there are plenty of engineering majors in top law schools, so computer science (Which isn't technically engineering), shouldn't be an exception to that rule.

I guess I should have included in my original post that I prefer a university (medium to large) university over a LAC and for the school to either be in NC or north of it.

Also, as many of you are advising me against CS, what major would you suggest that would be good for both law school admission and job recruitment if I do not attend law school.

Thanks :)

I would say look at any technical colleges - Rensselaer, RIT, etc. Although they are technical (and wouldn't be thought of for pre-law persay) you will get a great technical education in Comp Sci and have a great background for law based on the other requirements at the school.
