Does it matter which computer to get if I'm a prospective cs major?

Sorry if this question is kind of stupid.

Not really, just a decent PC will do. Unless you're going into heavy graphics stuff or video stuff, in which case you will need a computer suitable for that. I am considering a CS double major with music, but most CS majors here don't have monster machines.

You can get by fine with a $250 used laptop if you had to. Technically anything with a NIC supported by linux (virtually any computer) that can run something like damn small linux will work fine.

That's assuming you're writing in vi and don't need it compiled any time soon.

I think CS departments are probably the most flexible in terms of supporting all platforms.

In reality, you can do anything with any computer. You just have to know how. :)

And have enough patience

I would suggest a notebook with an external LCD or a desktop in addition to a notebook unless you plan to do all your coding in labs. Screen real estate is quite useful when coding.

Xps M1530.....

any kind works. cheap $500 laptop to $4000 overmoded, custom built laptop
