We visited on Monday, with my son, a High school Sr, who wants to major in Computer Science. Loved the school, but am concerned with his choice of major at this school. Can anyone comment on the quality of the computer science dept. He is out of state - NJ, and also interested in Univ of MD, Virginia Tech, Rutgers. Was impressed with VT info session in CS - They offer a co-op in 2nd & 3rd yrs where one semester is spent working for Company in CS field and the other is attending the college, thus makeing this a 5 year program. however, you do not pay for the semesters that you are working and earning a wage. I wonder if NC offers Co-op program similar to this. Thank You.

I just want to throw this out there as I just completed my search for colleges last spring, and I now go to UNC. At first, I started looking for schools by the departments, I even put down “physics” as my major on my UNC application. By the time I applied to schools for the January 1st Deadline my major choice on applications was chemistry. Right now, I’m currently a Biology major, but considering psychology instead. The idea here is that your son needs to pick college based on “fit” rather than what his major goal is now.
There are several people on my hall who have been dead set on being a doctor since they were five years old, they’re 2 weeks into chemistry and are reconsidering their goals.
This is just something for your son to think about. He definitely needs to make sure he loves the school for the atmosphere and goes in knowing that he might end up 4 years later with a degree in something completely different.
As for the Co-op program I do not know, but I am sure there are others here who will be glad to share their knowledge!
I hope I have been of some help!
