Computer Science/Mechanical Engineering

Hi everyone,

I am a Computer Science/Mechanical Engineering double major at University of Maryland - College Park. (Both programs ranked in the top.) I want to know is it worth transferring to University of Illinois. How good is the engineering at U of I? Don't both learn pretty much the same things?

Is it worth transferring because U of I's computer science and mechanical engineering rankings are both higher then UMCP 's computer science and mechanical engineering rankings? What I am trying to say here is what makes U of I so highly ranked compared to UMCP? I want to receive the best university education as possible. With all this said, is transferring a good idea for me?

I would say that for the marginal gain from transferring from one strong program, and one in which you are currently established, to another strong program isn’t worth the effort. You’ll get a good education in your chosen areas of expertise at either your current university, or U of I. The ranking differences in the two programs aren’t that great, and fluctuate from year to year. Unless you have a reason for transferring other than what you mentioned, I’d say stay where you’re at.
