Computer science = no mac?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering studying computer science or some variation of that in college (at the very least, taking programming classes). Do most computer science majors have Macs or PC's? I love my Mac, and was considering getting a new one for college. However, I feel like it's still very much a Windows-based world. Would I be at a disadvantage in some of my CS classes if I bought a MacBook Pro? Do some colleges require that, if you're in a computer science program, you need to have a PC?

Thanks!

nah. if anything it will be emphasized towards free operating systems like linux because a lot of great, free program development tools exist for those platforms.

it doesn’t matter what OS you use–the department will provide computers with the programs you need that you can either remotely access or use in a lab.

You can always run Win7, Linux, etc. on your Mac. Either using VMWare or Parallels or booted into it.

Universities provide lab computers but it’s nice to be able to do your homeworks and labs wherever you want to be.

At my university, the CS program uses a mixture of Solaris, Linux, and Mac. The Macs are only very rarily used.

My friend is a CS major and he has a Macbook Pro so it’s your decision.
