Hello, Im a senior in high school and I really want to major in Computer Science. What schools in texas have good Computer Science programs that I could get into? I really want a school that will get me good employment opportunities nation wide in the future.

Here are my stats for reference:

GPA: 4.2 (5 Scale)
SAT: 1590, CR- 490 Math-620 CW-480 (Mediocre, I know. Planning to take it again in October)
Rank: 95/699

EC's: JV Soccer (9th), National Hispanic Honor Society (11th & 12th), Youth for Christ(11th& 12th), Part time Job creating websites for 3 months, and running for class historian this year.

Voluntary work: Around 500 hours of helping at my community church.

Ive taken around 6 Pre-Ap courses, and taking 5 AP Courses this year.
I also plan on writing the special situation essay for UT as I couldn't be really involved in school because I had to come home and take care of things since I have a single mother of 3.

UT is by far above the others, but not for everyone. Rice is a close second.

TAMU is not terribly far behind
Others include UTArlington, UHouston, and Texas Tech

That said, I work in that particular field and it is my experience that while college can matter, what really makes a difference is experience. No matter what school you choose (and there are probably dozens in Texas), try to get involved in something where you build or work on real world situations and get some experience. Internships over the summer…even helpdesk work for someone at least shows you can work in a real world situation.

When we interview, we rarely look at colleges so much as whether the person has worked with Linux, understands some basic scripting and has done it…That kind of thing. If someone walks in with a degree from a well respected school we may look at it, but it rarely factors more than about 5 percent into whether we hire.

All the schools have computer science pretty much. Believe it or not, UNT has a good computer science department, as does UT Dallas. The privates do too. There is also SFA and Texas Tech.

Both schools at the moment are a reach. If you improve your scores by a big number, A&M can become an automatic but might have filled all their CS seats by then.

A&M Academic Admit Requirement (achieve a combined SAT Math and SAT Critical Reading score of at least 1300 with a test score of at least 600 in each of these components; or achieve a composite ACT score of at least 30 with a test score of at least 27 in ACT Math and ACT English (students must take the writing component of the SAT and/or ACT in order for the test score to be considered))

Neither is guaranteed and so you are applying assuming there is something in your app that will get you admitted. It is possible one of those schools may admit you based on your hardships under holistic process and put you in a major that is uninteresting to you.

Would you still go if they give you general education or something like that for a major?

If you apply to University of Houston for example before Dec 1st, you are guaranteed an admission and allowed your major in all likelihood.

Trinity University has a very good Comp Sci program that sends a bunch of people to Cornell/Brown/Rice for grad school every year as well. I don’t think you would get in with that SAT however.

You might want to look at UH/UNT

You won’t get into A&M or UT with that SAT and no auto admit.

Okay so what would my SAT scores have to be to have a chance at UT and TAMU?

Im planning on sending my improved(hopefully) scores before the application deadline so how could the CS spots be filled up? I wouldnt go if they do put me in the CS program.
